Reginald
Mitchell’s Biography
Reginald Mitchell, a 32-year-old
Navajo (Dine) from Gallup, NM, is a self defense specialist/consultant,
motivational speaker, and martial arts competitor. He owns and operates
“Fierce Protection Systems” a modern, realistic system of combat
which specializes in standing, clinching, and ground fighting. Besides providing
reality based training in Jiu-jitsu, Thai Kick-boxing, Boxing, Close Quarter
Combat, Mixed Martial Arts, and Knife/Stick Fighting, FPS incorporates the
traditional principles associated with the Navajo Warrior.
Furthermore, he has developed
specialized programs and conducts presentations for local, national and
international organizations. The versatility of his programs has allowed him to
work with in the fields of law enforcement, education, youth recreation, social
services, and health and human services. He provides training in “Police
Protection and Control Tactics” for law enforcement and security personnel. In
addition, he has worked with numerous schools and organizations, providing
training in” “Teacher Protection and Control Tactics,” which teaches basic
principles of preventing and properly dealing with confrontation, “Women’s
Fierce Self Defense,” which addresses the realities of aggression and assaults
directed toward women, and “Violence Prevention,” which helps one find
empowerment, use effective communication skills, and understand and deal with
the realities of violence.
After participating in an exercise
video, Rez Robics, he has been conduction health and fitness presentation. In
2001, he assisted Pamela Belgarde in choreographing and instructing aerobic
routines, which utilized a mix of martial arts movements and pow-wow dance steps
done to the sounds of contemporary Native American music. It was produced by
Navajo Health Promotions and Dream Catchers to educate Native Americans of all
ages to the importance of proper nutrition and exercise in order to combat
diabetes. In the video, he worked with Native American entertainers Drew Lacapa,
White Mountain Apache comedian, and Elaine Miles, Nez Perce/Cayuse actor. Since
that time, he has been teaching Rez Robics and giving memorable motivational
speeches at national and international conferences.
Alongside running his business, he
has been competing in Jiu-jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts tournaments and
competitions. To prepare for
national and international tournaments, he spends up to 6 hours a day lifting
weights, running, and training in Boxing, Thai-kickboxing, and Jiu-jitsu. Part
of his training includes traveling outside of the state to work out with renown
martial artists, practioners at his own caliber of skill.
More recently, he has become part of Team Megaton, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu
competition team of Phoenix, AZ which is led by Wellington “Megaton” Diaz.
In April 2003, Reginald became the first Native American to compete at the Pan
American International Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Championships at Santa Barbara, CA.
Competing with the worlds best at this prestigious event, he placed
fourth out of 36 competitors in the 187 lb. weight class.
Despite a separated shoulder he suffered during the first match, he
continued to advance through the tournament, losing out to a third place victory
by only one point to one of Ireland’s best. His outstanding performance did
not go unnoticed, for he was invited to compete in the World Jiu-jitsu
Championship at Rio De Janeiro, Brazil and was selected by the Native American
Sports Council to become a “Sports Warrior”
and encourage Native youth to become more health conscious and physically
fit.
Reginald credits his lifestyle and
accomplishments to his martial arts training.
Through the arts, he was able to create programs and become the man he
has always wanted to be. He shares
what he has learned about becoming self-sufficient and hopes his message propels
his audience to actively pursue their goals and dreams so that they can enjoy
their lives. His goal is to
increase the amount of work he does
on a international scale in order to touch as many lives as possible. It is his
duty to continue the proud legacy left behind by his ancestors. Moreover, due to
his expertise in self defense and understanding of violence and human behavior,
he plans on becoming one of the leading authorities in hand to hand combat,
providing reality based training to large scale police departments and security
companies and the United States Military. Like
the warrior of old, he strives to empower and serve all people. |
